About Radiation Oncology
Radiation oncology is a highly specific cancer treatment that involves controlled use of radiation to treat cancer, either to cure, or to reduce pain and other cancer causing symptoms. Radiation therapy is the term that describes the actual treatment delivered by the radiation oncology team.
Practice of radiation oncology involves three unique specialist professionals- radiation oncologists (doctors), radiation therapists, and radiation oncology medical physicists. These specialists use advanced technologies to deliver safe and effective radiation therapy to cancer patients with as few side effects as possible. Radiation therapy is part of the treatment process in around 40% of all patients cured of cancer.
